A Mass on Foreign Ground features work by Ani Gonzalez, Elizabeth Newberry, Jessica Martin, Richard Sanchez, Richard Spit, and Joshua Veasey. The exhibition explores the visual field through varying figure-ground relationships. Assembled to represent a spectrum of interpretations, Mass assumes a role as figure, object, gathering, scene, pile, and form; in correspondence, Foreign Ground becomes its backdrop, its new surrounding spaces.
Influenced by a collective trip through China sponsored by New World School of the Arts, the artists manifest themes of placement and displacement through the relativity of nearness and remoteness. Taking root in unfamiliar locations, the object’s position becomes at contrast within its environment, essentially provoking questions of orientation and otherness.
