Claudia Scalise was born in Los Angeles and has lived and worked in Miami since 1989. Her work explores the connection between memory and psychogeography, using minimal compositions and a muted palette. Most frequently painting in an intimate scale with oils on wood, her compositions combine a realistic approach and loose abstraction to describe familiar landscapes and architecture. Works in Uncommon Words vary in scale from hand-held to wall sized compositions of gouache and flashe on canvas and wood. Through landscapes, still life and figures from film stills, these images eschew the physical aspects of memory, and instead offer a glimpse into a dark ephemeral mind space.
